Edo State dubbed “The heartbeat of the nation” is located in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The capital is Benin City, the fourth largest city in Nigeria, and the centre of the country’s rubber industry. Created in 1991 from the former Bendel State. It has eighteen (18) Local Government Areas.
In 2006 National population census, the state population was 3,233,366 and projected to be around 8,000,000 in 2022.
It shares boundaries with Kogi State to the Northeast, Anambra State to the East, Delta State to the Southeast and Southsouth and Ondo State to the West.
It is a diverse state that is inhabited by the Edo (or Bini), Esan, Owan and Afemai people. The most common language spoken is the Edo language, which is commonly spoken in Benin City.
The Mineral Resources found in the State include: Bitumen, Dolomite, Phosphate, Glass-sand, Iron-ore, Lignite, Limestone, Marble, Oil and Gas.
Notable tertiary institutions of learning in the State include: University of Benin, Auchi Polytechnic, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, College of Education, Ekiadolor and many others.
Moreover, the State equally has notable health institutions like the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Federal Neuro-Psychiatric in Benin City, Specialist Teaching Hospital in Irrua, Edo Specialist Hospital in Benin City and a lot of others.
