Facts & Figures
of Host State

Enugu State was created in August 27, 1991, out of the then Anambra State from what was formerly known as Anambra North by the regime of General Ibrahim Babaginda. It’s capital is Enugu. The name of the state was derived from its capital city, Enugu. The word “Enugu” means “the top of the hill”.

Situated in the inland eastern Nigeria, Enugu State covers 7, 161 square kilometres. It shares boundaries with Kogi state and Benue to the north, Ebonyi to the east, Abia to the south, and Anambra to the west. It includes most of the Udi-Nsukka plateau, which rises to more than 1,000 feet (300m). Enugu and Nsukka are its major towns. Enugu was the headquarters of the former East Central State and Eastern Nigeria.

Enugu state is situated on the highlands of the Agwu, Udi and Nsukka Hills to the east as well as Oji River basin to the west. The state is covered by open grassland, with occasional woodlands and clusters of oil palm trees. Lying within the semi-tropical rain forest of the south, the state spreads towards the north through a land area of approximately 7, 161 square kilometer. Its physical features change gradually from tropical rain forest to open woodland and then to Savannah.

The state has an estimated population of 3,267, 837 persons (2006 census) Enugu State is a multi-ethnic state with the Igbos constituting the majority of the state’s population. The state plays host to hundreds of public primary schools, and secondary schools and a number of tertiary institutions including the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Enugu State is noted for its coal deposits. Its main economy depended on coal before the discovery of oil in commercial quantities. That is, the main reason Enugu is nick named the coal city. The state is predominantly agricultural with yam tubers, palm produce and rice being their main produce.

A network of roads connect important centres of trade and industry in the state. A rail line of Eastern District of the Nigerian Railways runs through the State capital Enugu to Port Harcourt in Rivers State and Enugu to Makurdi then Northwards.
