Ekiti State, part of the former Ondo state, was founded in October 1st, 1996 with its capital city in Ado Ekiti. It covers an area of land mass of 6,353km square (2,453square miles) with a population of 3.3 million as at the year 2016 ranking 31st of 36 of the federation. It is located in South West Nigeria, sharing a border with Kwara state in the north, Kogi state in the North East, South and south East of Ondo state as well as Osun state in the West.
Ekiti state was formerly acknowledged as Fountain of Knowledge owing to the fact that it was apparently recognized to be a home of highest number of professors in Nigeria since its independence from the old Ondo state. However, during the tenure of the former governor His Excellency Dr John Kayode Fayemi, the slogan changed to Land of Honour and Integrity (Ile Iyi, Ile Eye).
Ekiti state is majorly involved in agriculture chiefly of yams, rice, cocoa and cassava crops. It is a homogeneous state where a dialect known as Ekiti is majorly spoken.
There are 909 public primary schools and 219 public secondary schools in the state, and a number of tertiary institutions which include Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekitithat was established in 2009; Ekiti State University, Federal University Oye Ekiti and the newly established Bamidele Olumilua Univerity of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti. Other tertiary institutions in Ekiti State are: The Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti, Crown Polytechnic Ado Ekiti, College of Health Technology, Ijero Ekiti.
The dominant religion practised in Ekiti state is Christianity with 5 to 10 per cent of Islamic and traditional religion.
Ekiti State is blessed with numerous natural resources, the land is potentially rich in mineral resources such as columbite, iron ore, granites, limestone, phosphate, gemstone, kaolinite, baryte, and aquamarine among others.
Ekiti state is also endowed with water resources. The following are some of its major rivers: Ogbese, Ose, Osun, Ero. The state is blessed with tourist attraction centres like Ikogosi warm springs, Arinta waterfalls, Erin-Ijesa waterfalls, Fajuyi memorial park in Ado Ekiti, Olosunta and Orole hills of Ikere among others. The most popular among these tourist centres is the Ikogosi warm springs. It is notable for its natural feature and is a source of revenue for the state. At present, the spring is being processed and package into bottled water for commercial purpose by a private company in Nigeria.
Ekiti state comprises of 16 local government areas: namely, Ado Local government, Ise orun, Gboyin, Oye, Irepodun-Ifelodun, Ilejemeje, Ijero, Ekiti-west, Ikole, Moba, Ekiti East, Efonalaye, Ekiti South-west, Ido-Osi, Emure and Ikere local government.
